Carbon, which is mostly referred to as Carbon dioxide (CO2), is majorly the reason for rising global warming and altering climate scenarios on Earth. The people are looking for a sustainable future for mankind and strategizing to achieve net zero carbon emission by the half of this century.
As the actions required are somehow falling short of addressing the burgeoning issue, a collective global campaign and decoding the crucial aspects of carbon to reflect in policies, processes, and business can promise positive results. This approach to tackling carbon emissions and understanding its associated challenges has also been placed in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement.
The world has targeted that global warming levels must not exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius. For this, the world needs to achieve the net zero target by 2050, and before that, it needs to achieve 45% of the emissions reduction target by 2030. But the world is falling short in its commitment and it looks like an ambitious target to be fulfilled with ongoing efforts.
The world economies are now making net zero a crucial aspect of reducing carbon burden. The stakeholders like governments, NGOs, policymakers, and businesses are responsibly trying to make way for fulfilling their responsibility by minimizing the carbon footprint to ensure climate justice.
But to decode what is enough to save sustainable living on the Earth is still a puzzle. To address it right, terms like real net zero emission, net zero emission, carbon neutrality, and climate neutrality need to be understood considering their contribution to addressing climate change.
Currently, anthropogenic activities are highly responsible for GHG emissions. The rising standard of living is increasing the carbon footprint. Thus, bringing down the GHG emissions through human-induced activities equal to zero currently seems an unrealistic target to even focus on.
As 2030 and 2050 are going to be the crucial targets, the world is preparing to achieve net zero emission and carbon neutrality on realistic terms. The policy orientation to adopt renewable energy transition, discourage fossil fuel usage, and adopt a sustainable lifestyle in letter and spirit can sustain the future of this beautiful planet and bring effective change.
