India achieved a milestone in sustainable transportation with the launch of its first indigenous hydrogen-powered train on 17 July 2026. Developed by Indian Railways, the initiative marks India’s entry into hydrogen-based rail mobility and reinforces efforts to modernize transport infrastructure through cleaner energy solutions. The train commenced operations on the Jind–Sonipat section of Northern Railway in Haryana, demonstrating hydrogen fuel cell technology in passenger rail services.
