PREPARING FOR THE NEXT WAVE OF WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION

The workplace has never remained still. Machines changed physical work; computers transformed offices; digital platforms reshaped communication and collaboration. Today, another shift is taking shape. Technology, changing business models, and evolving expectations are reshaping not only where people work, but how work itself is organized.

The next wave is broader than adopting new tools. Artificial intelligence (AI) and automation are changing tasks, while flexible work, digital platforms, and new organizational models are changing how teams operate. As roles evolve, so do the capabilities people need to perform them. The World Economic Forum notes that many industrial jobs are expected to evolve over the coming decade, increasing the importance of technological literacy alongside judgement, creativity, and problem-solving.

For organizations, preparing means looking beyond immediate hiring needs. Workforce planning will increasingly involve identifying emerging capabilities, redesigning roles, supporting internal mobility, and creating opportunities for continuous learning. AI can contribute to this transition, but its value depends on how effectively organizations combine technology with human expertise and help employees move into changing roles and build confidence before disruption forces change unexpectedly across their careers.

For employees, preparation means becoming comfortable with change rather than waiting for it. Technical skills will matter, but adaptability, communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and the ability to learn will remain valuable. The OECD similarly emphasizes the importance of developing technical, cognitive, and social capabilities that help people respond to changing workplaces and sustain their careers through periods of transition.

India is entering this transition with a large and diverse workforce. Preparing for wider technological change will require stronger digital capabilities, continuous reskilling, industry–education partnerships, and pathways that help workers move into emerging roles while building on existing experience.

The next workforce will therefore not be defined by one technology or one way of working. It will be shaped by people who can move across changing roles and organizations that can develop talent continuously. Preparing for transformation is ultimately about building the confidence and capabilities to adapt, recognizing that the most resilient workforces are those ready to evolve as work changes.
