Recently, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) shared vital and valuable information about the Glacial Lakes and their continuous expansion in the Indian Himalayas. Here, the substantial presence of glaciers and snow is greatly sensitive to climate change in terms of physical and societal impacts and directly affects the region’s delicate ecosystem.

The massive industrialization in the 18^th century has threatened glaciers across the globe. Thus, ISRO has felt the need to study the Himalayan region which is undergoing significant thinning and retreat over time. The study and monitoring of Glacial Lakes are evident for its gradual expansion and its associated risks by using satellite remote sensing technology. It will help in inventory management also to enable long-term assessment of changes in glacial lakes.
